Are squirrels active and seeking nuts in the winter?

Squirrels remain active the whole year. In the winter they are scrounging around on the ground for nuts and digging up some they buried earlier. You will see them mostly digging up nuts. Somehow it seems they can smell them because I don't really believe they can remember where all those they buried. In one day they buried two gallons of pecans. Maybe they're planning for their future because I see a lot of pecan tree seedlings growing around the place. Are squirrels active and seeking nuts in the winter?
