Can squirrels digest chocolate?

A friend and I were feeding squirrels the other day - they like peanuts but not bread. My friend threw a piece of chocolate and they took it. I know dogs cannot have chocolate. How about squirrels? Can squirrels digest chocolate?
Yes, they could digest chocolates. Squirrels rely on foods rich in protein, carbohydrates, and fat but cannot digest cellulose. Can squirrels digest chocolate?
Nobody and no thing touches my chocolate!!!!

Animals usually know what not to eat. When it comes to chocolate that rule goes out the window.

If my dog eats everything including kitty litter chocolate will not hurt him. Squirrels are pickier about what they eat, your wee squirrel probably just took it to store he will be fine.
Dogs can not eat chocolate because of a compound in it called theobromine. Their systems can not handle it.

I have not been able to find any studies done on the effects of theobromine on squirrels, so I would not take a chance on it. ';When in doubt, don't'; is always the safest way to go.

Feed the squirrels nuts and sunflower seeds. Safer and more natural foods for them.
Im sure they can eat chocolate....they get into trash cans all the time...im sure somewhere a squirrel is eating a piece right now
It is not a good idea to feed them any candy since they can get 'addicted' to the sugar and fail to get a well balanced diet. They sometimes actually begin eating so much candy that they fail to get all the nutrients they need. However you probably caused no harm.
