Find a snug nest you can keep warm with body heat, at least as much as you need, and sleep through the tough times. Only problem is, that tree or whatever has to stay there, undisturbed by others, until Spring, for this to work well. There was a time when a self-respecting squirrel could count on that, and nod off untroubled by dreams. But with chain saws making such a racket . . .
Squirrels don't go anywhere. They have their nests built high in the fork of a tree. During the summer they store nuts in the ground and like humans, they spend extra time in their cozy beds in the winter months.
